Edges of the Fabric

You need to work the edge stitches (first and last stitch) of the double knit fabric differently so that the border is nice and neat.  You will typically want to work both strands of the working yarn together for the first and last stitch.  Here are some alternatives:

  • Knit the last stitch of the row with both yarn strands held together, then slip the first stitch of the next row knitwise to create a corded effect.
  • Knit the last stitch and the first stitch of the row with both yarn strands held together.
  • Knit all stitches with just one yarn strand each, then twist the yarn strands together at the end of every row before turning.
